H.R.Giger Passes Away

giger

It is with great sadness to announce that H.R.Giger, the artist behind the design for the creatures in Alien has passed away at 74. He died in hospital yesterday after the results of the injuries he sustained in a fall in his native Switzerland.

He was the man that brought nightmares to countless people for his work in the Alien franchise, but also worked on SpeciesPoltergeist and the brilliantly names Killer Condom.

Whilst many be be familiar with his work, he name was not always known to the masses and it is a shame that only now will some people know who the man is because of his passing.

He will be sadly missed.

Richard Donner Confirms Goonies Sequel

the goonies

It is safe to say that a vast majority of people grew up with The Goonies and it stuck with them into their adult years, well brace yourself because your world is about to be rocked!

Over the weekend, Richard Donner, who directed the original film, along with the Lethal Weapon franchise and Superman,  came out and confirmed that a sequel would be happening. He was asked the question of whether you he direct a comic book movie, to which he replied:

“If you call Goonies a comic book…We’re doing a sequel”

Some may be excited by this news, and I hate to say but I think they may be in the minority here. The Goonies is one of the quintessential 80s movies and a whole generation has taken it to their hearts. To try and create a sequel for it 29 years after it originally came out is pushing it a little bit.

Donner apparently wants to try and get as much of the original cast back for this film as well, so it will be interesting to see who actually comes on board this time around.

Scream Television Series Details

scream ghostface

It seems that now you can’t have a movie without someone trying to turn it into a television series as well, first off it was Fargo and it now it looks like Scream is getting the same treatment.

After 4 movies, MTV have gotten their hands on the franchise and are going to turn it into a series.

The folks over at Bloody Disgusting have stated that it looks promising that Wes Craven, the director of the original films, will also direct the hour long pilot episode for the show. So at least that is one less thing to worry about.

Much like the films, the plot of the television will focus on the rules of a slasher film. These were pretty clear in the franchise so it will be interesting to see how this concept works on the small screen. Also the pilot “explores a YouTube video that has gone viral and causes problems for the protagonist, Audrey, who is caught in the middle of murder and the town’s troubled past.”

TV Line has some more details about some of the upcoming characters:

Harper Duval: A 16-year-old beauty “who’s a little too introverted and intellectual to be a social butterfly” but has nevertheless been annointed by the popular crowd to be one of their own. “She feels guilty that she has drifted away from former best friend Audrey,” but at least she’s got a Gilmore Girls-esque relationship with mom Maggie to keep her sane.

Audrey Jesen: Haper’s former BFF is described as “the bi-curious daughter of a Lutheran pastor” who’s “more arresting-looking than pretty.” This “artsy loner” dreams of being a filmmaker and shares a close bond with tech genius Noah.

Noah Foster: Audrey’s closest confidante is “creative, brilliant and tech-savvy enough to be the next Steve Jobs.” Lucky for him, he’s got a great sense of humor (“a la John Cusack in his teen prime”) that helps him navigate the halls of his high school. What’s more, Noah possesses “an encyclopedic knowledge of books, films, TV, apps, etc.”

Margaret “Maggie” Duval: Harper’s mom, in her early to mid-40s, is the town’s medical examiner, “a grown-up science geek who plays down her beauty.” Maggie spends a lot of her time trying to make up for the fact that Harper’s dad abandoned them. Oh, and she’s harboring “a dark secret from her past.”

Noah seems a lot like the character of Randy, played by Jamie Kennedy, from Scream 2 and the idea of a “bi-curious daughter of a Lutheran pastor” is not a sentence I ever thought I’d hear attached to the Scream franchise.

I am a huge fan of the first two Scream movies and depending on my mood I am always willing to give the third a shot, you can’t beat a Jay and Silent Bob cameo, however I wasn’t impressed with the fourth film. I am not holding my breathe for this television show, but seeing as how Craven is attached to the pilot episode it may actually be OK. We will just have to wait and see.

Micro Budget Film One Day Masterclass

Intense-Masterclass

The film industry is an incredibly difficult industry to work within, especially if you are just starting out. You may have a brilliant idea in your head, but are struggling to get it down onto the page in the form of a screenplay, or you may already be lucky enough to have crossed the first hurdle and possess your screenplay, but don’t know how to get funding for your project.

Well, the folks over at Intense Productions have taken it upon themselves to help people out with an upcoming one day masterclass they have organised to show film makers how the industry works and give them tips and pointers on the various areas they might be struggling with to get their films off the ground.

One of the main guests at the masterclass is Carlos Gallardo, who both produced and starred in El Mariachi. He will be on hand to discuss the various ways to fund your movie, hopefully not suggesting taking up medical testing, like a certain Mr Rodriguez

This intense one day class seems like a brilliant way for not just film students to get involved in the industry, but for anyone who is trying to get their movie made and distributed. The day is happening all across the UK, so there should be plenty of opportunities for people to attend.

  • Glasgow – 28th April
  • Lancaster – 30th April
  • Newcastle – 1st May
  • London – 3rd May
  • Manchester – 5th May

Utero Finishes Principal Photography

Utero Poster

It has to be said that pregnancy can be a bit scary at the best of times, but when it is main theme of an upcoming horror movie, you know you are in trouble! That is especially the theory in the latest film from Bryan Coyne, Utero.

The plot of the movie, according to Coyne is:

“an agoraphobic unwed mother who finds her psyche unraveling as she becomes convinced that her unborn child is more monster than human.”

This certainly makes for an interesting premise for a movie. It has been a while since there has been any good body horror films within the genre and it will be interesting to see how this film plays out.

Coyne is very excited about the overall project himself:

“Shooting Utero was a dream come true for me. Like any filmmaking experience it was a grandiose challenge. But the commitment of our crew and cast, a wonderful commune of pure artists, helped me achieve something astoundingly effective. I can’t wait for this film to be seen.”

The films stars Jessica Cameron, who also helped produce the film, had this to say about her experience:

“I could not be more thrilled with the amazing production that has been Utero. The story, camerawork, and lighting, is all so impressive and fresh. I cannot wait to share this with audiences!”

I know it is common for the stars and makers of the films to be excited for their finished product and can’t wait for people to see their film, but it seems like both Cameron and Coyne are extra passionate about this film and I am really rather looking forward to seeing the completed piece.

Bananaman Coming To The Big Screen

Whilst this post may only interest the British readers, it is something that I couldn’t just let me go by.

Yesterday, a new website came up online for a Bananaman movie. Whilst at the moment it only features the hashtag #PeelThePower and a date for 2015, it seems to say that along with The Avengers 2 and Batman vs Superman, that year is going to be featuring another iconic superhero.

For those that have never heard of the character, the story follows of schoolboy Eric, who when he eats a banana becomes the title character of Bananaman.

Bananaman

It really was as ridiculous as it sounds, but someone, somewhere has felt the need to bring this character back.

Part of my is immensely excited for this film, as it was a cartoon I remember from my own childhood, and I have actually been saying for a few years that there should be a movie based on the cartoon, but I wanted Nathan Fillion as the character of Bananaman, if he could pull off a British accent. I’m sure he could, he’s Nathan Fillion.

Anyway, if you want to check out the website you can here  but for the moment the site is really rather sparse!

The Incredibles 2 Is Happening!

The Incredibles

After a decade of waiting, yesterday it was announced by Robert Iger, who is the Chairman and CEO over at Disney, that The Incredibles is finally getting a sequel.

Fans of the first film have been wanting a follow up since the last one came out in 2004 so this news has made a lot of people happy, and I for one am one of them. I have to say that The Incredibles is my favourite Disney/Pixar movie and I just hope they Brad Bird can bring the same brilliance that he did with the first offering to the much anticipated sequel.
