Spike Lee Responds To Open Letter From Graphic Designer

Earlier this week, graphic designer Juan Luis Garcia, issued an open letter to director Spike Lee about his involvement in creating artwork for his latest movie, Oldboy. The full letter can be read here. In the letter Garcia talks about how badly he was treated by the agency that was dealing with him and his work in regards to the project. He states that he “was taken advantage of, lead on, lied to, manipulated, and harassed for over two months” and the issue of money became more and more of a problem, with the initial “insultingly low offer” and how he would “make the same amount of money in a single day as a photo assistant as what they offered and I had worked on these almost exclusively for two months”.

Over the last few days the letter has spread like wildfire across the internet with many people showing their support for Garcia and how he has been treated. It was obvious that the news would eventually get back to Spike himself with so many people sharing the letter and Oldboy now having been released in the US.

Like many people nowadays, Lee took to Twitter to express his feelings over the issue. Below is the tweet he sent in regards to the whole issue.

So far, Garcia has yet to see any money from his project. Whether this issue will be sorted out amicably is yet to be seen, but I don’t think Lee will be loosing any sleep over the problem, unlike the graphic designer in question.

$400 Million To Make Bill & Ted 3?

bill and ted

Whilst doing the publicity rounds for his latest movie, 47 RoninKeanu Reeves has spoken some more to Access Hollywood about the apparent upcoming Bill & Ted 3.

He still confirms that there is a script for the project and that “the script is funny and there’s a story to tell there, so there are efforts being made to try and continue that journey”, but also added “it needs to be adapted because right now, it would cost $400 million to make”. In regards to the actual plot of story Keanu said; “there’s a rift in the universe and there’s all sorts of creatures.” So it seems that the story would move away from Earth in this one, how well this would work in relation to the previous journeys, only time will tell.

When asked about teaming up again with his original co-star, Alex Winter’s, Reeves simply stated; “that would be surreal”

Latest Trailer For The Boxtrolls

Here is the latest trailer for what looks to be another hit from Laika, the studio that brought us Coraline and Paranorman.

This time around though, we are not given a look into the actual movie, but the painstaking process that goes into making a stop motion wonder like this.

It is nice to see the mixing of the footage from the movie and showing how it gets made. It breaks down the barrier that film making often tries to keep up. It allows us to see what actually goes into making a movie and the finished results.

I am very excited for this movie, and hope it follows in the tone of their previous works; one which is appealing to children but also shows them the slightly darker aspects of life!

Alan Partridge – The Star Of Norwich Christmas Lights

Now is the season that towns and cities across the country are getting ready to switch on their lights for the upcoming festive period, and Norwich is no other. However, they decided to take their decorations one step further and honour their favourite son, Alan Partridge.

The display, which was unveiled last week, contains a 9m high light version of Partridge’s face and sings the song Cuddly Toy by Roachford which was sang by Alan in his movie, Alpha Papa.

Unfortunately, Alan himself couldn’t be at the event so he sent Simon Greenall, who plays the character of Michael, in the television show and film, in his place with a message for the people of Norwich:

“Dear people of Norwich, and to a lesser extent anyone here from Suffolk – welcome! I’m genuinely heartbroken not to be there with you, but it’s quiz night at the Rose & Crown and I’m the designated driver. You’re about to witness the biggest turning on of lights since the end of the three-day week. The electricity used to power the illuminations is enough to run a trouser press for over 25 years. Instead, it’s powering an LED effigy of my face and body, lighting up the Christmas night just as the Archangel Gabriel did over two thousand years ago. I hope you have a wonderful festive season. A-ha.”

Tarantino To Make Another Western

tarantino

It looks like Quentin Tarantino is set to step back behind the camera once again, and whilst many hope he would be giving audiences the next installment in the Kill Bill saga; he is returning to a genre he has only just recently covered

In an interview with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show, Tarantino dropped a few hints about his next upcoming project:

“I haven’t told anyone this publicly, but I will say the genre: It’s a western.” He was quick to add though, that this next film won’t be a sequel to Django Unchained; “I had so much fun doing Django, and I love westerns so much that after I taught myself how to make one, it’s like ‘OK! Let me make another one now that I know what I’m doing”

Seeing as how Django was an interpretation of a previous body of work, with a bit of Tarantino’s own idea of how history should have gone down, much like Inglorious Basterds; it will be interesting to see where he goes with his own completely unique story within the genre.

MST3K – 25 Years Of Making Terrible Movies Enjoyable

Yesterday, it was 25 years since Mystery Science Theater 3000 (or MST3k as it shall be known for the rest of this article, because it is much quicker to type!) first graced our television screens and it is a shame to say, that even though it has become one of the most beloved cult television shows ever; only a handful of people, in the grand scheme of things, have ever heard of it.

The show changed the way that people watched television forever and made it possible for bad movies to be enjoyable once again.

To explain  the premise of the show to someone that has never heard of it can often seem like a daunting task; but if you are reading this and have never heard of the show (and I implore you after finishing this to go out immediately and watch some, you will thank me. In fact, don’t even finish this article, go now! Go enrich your life with the genius that is MST3K, and then come back; that’s if you can drag yourself away from the show!) I will try and sum it as plainly as possible. The show revolves around a man (Joel Robinson for the first 4 and half seasons and Mike Nelson for the remaining 6 and half) and his robot companions trapped on a satellite, being forced to watch terrible movies in an attempt to find the one film that will break the will of the human race and the evil scientists that have imprisoned him can take over the planet.

Still with me? Now, as Mike or Joel and the bots, are forced to watch the movies, the audience as well are made to join in with the viewing hell, and get to watch them comment on the movie as it is playing. They are shown as silhouette across the bottom of the screen and the audience (as in us) are sat behind them.

To many this sounds like something terrible and a complete waste of time to watch. Whilst to others, it is a slice of pure heaven.

Now even though it has been 25 years since the show started, and it has been off the air for 14, although it was kept alive by people who kept sharing the tapes, a debate still rages on till this day over who was the better host on the show. Joel or Mike. It is something that splits MST3K fans down the middle. I for one am a Mike Nelson fan, but that is just my personal preference.

Fans of MST3K needn’t worry in this day and age though, because it has progressed into other things as well, such as Cinematic Titanic, which features some of the original cast of MST3K and its original creator Joel Robinson and RiffTrax, which likes to riff over modern day movies.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 holds a special place in many peoples hearts even after all of this time and it has become a much loved cult TV show that is so obscurely quotable that it allows you to make friends in an instant if you hear someone even mentioning “ROWSDOWER”. I highly recommend checking it out and if its style isn’t for you, well at least you can say you tried!
